Factors – numbers that are multiplied to get a product
Product – the number that is the result of multiplying two or more factors
Dividend – the number to be divided
Divisor – the number used to divide another number
Quotient – the answer to a division problem
Digits – the symbols used to show numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
Period –a group of 3 digits in a number. Periods are separated with a comma and start from the right of a number.
Place Value – the position of a digit in a number that is used to determine the value of the digit
Whole Number – the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc… without partial numbers
Standard Form – a common way of writing a number with commas separating groups of three digits starting from the right
Expanded Form – a way to write a number that shows the place value of each digit
Example: 3000 + 500 + 60 + 2
Word Form – a way to write a number using words
Equivalent Decimals – decimals that name the same amount
Example: 0.7 = 0.70
Associative Property of Addition – addends can be regrouped and the sum remains the same
Associative Property of Multiplication - factors can be regrouped and the product remains the same
Commutative Property of Addition - the order of addends can be changed and the sum remains the same
Commutative Property of Multiplication - the order of factors can be changed and the product remains the same
Rounding - a process that determines which multiple of 10, 100, 1000, etc…,a number is closest to
Expression - a mathematical phrase involving variables, numbers, and operations
Equation - a number sentence that uses an equal sign to show that two expressions have the same value
Variable - a letter that represents an unknown number in an expression
Co-efficient - the number in front of a variable that tells you to multiply (2g means 2 x g)
Distributive Property - multiplying a sum or difference by a number is the same as multiplying each number in the sum or difference by the number and adding or subtracting the products
3 x 48 = (3 x40) + (3 x 8)
Fraction - A symbol used to describe one or more parts of a whole that is divided into equal parts.
Mixed Number - a number that has a whole number part and a fraction part
Improper fraction - a fraction whose numerator is greater than or equal to its denominator
Multiple - the product of a given whole number and any other whole number
Simplest Form - a fraction in which the greatest common factor is one
